By 1870, Phoenix was officially acknowledged as a town and entered an economic boon by the time the Southern Pacific Railroad was established, which made Phoenix an important regional trade center in the southwest, from this time on until World War II, Phoenix’s economy anchored on the Five C’s, which were cotton, cattle, citrus, copper, and climate.

Today, Phoenix is a major center for a wide number of modern industries like medicine, aerospace, defense, and high-tech firms that made Phoenix’s hot climate more bearable thanks to increasing technologies like air conditioning made it widely available.
