About Tacoma, WA

Tacoma is the seat of Pierce County, Washington. It is located in western Washington, U.S., on Commencement Bay of Puget Sound, south of Seattle, northeast of Olympia, and northwest of Mount Rainier National Park.

It is located above Commencement Bay on scenic bluffs which, for millennia, were home to the Puyallup Tribe and other native tribes.

In 1852, Nicholas Delin built a water-powered sawmill on Commencement Bay and the first Euro-American settlement in the area. In 1868, Morton McCarver arrived. It was around this time when the area was called “Tacoma” which was from an indigenous name for Mt. Rainier, the snow-capped volcano to the southeast.

Locally, Tacoma is known as the “City of Destiny” because the area was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century.
