Greenville is the sixth-largest city in South Carolina and the administrative seat of Greenville County. Greenville is the heartland of the Upstate region of South Carolina and is home to one of the largest economically rich urban sprawls of the Deep South.
The area in Greenville was once a Cherokee tribe hunting ground. But in 1754, a Virginian settler named Richard Pearis established relations with the tribe and had a child with a local Cherokee woman, receiving around 100,000 of land as a gift during 1770.
When the American Revolution divided South Carolina between the Loyalists and Patriots, Pearis supported the former and attacked the Patriots. The Patriots responded by destroying the Cherokee’s regional hold of the region, burning their villages and crops. Cherokee leaders then sued for peace and ceded almost all their lands.
During the 1870s, new railroads and cotton mills rapidly developed the city’s economy, and it quickly became known as a cotton mill town. By 1915, Greenville was known as the “Textile Center of the South.”
However, the Great Depression forced mills to lay off swathes of workers which stagnated the city’s development. Still, after World War II, Greenville’s local economy was revitalized due to new stores and city-limit expansions.
Greenville’s local economy finally slowed down during the 1970s when retailers moved their businesses elsewhere. However, then-mayor Max Heller revitalized Greenville by building public infrastructure like the County Museum of Art and the Hughes Main Library and renovating roads like Main Street to be walk-friendly.
Today, Greenville is a rapidly expanding city that has stellar economic and developmental growth. The city is also famous for being a popular relocation hotspot because it’s within driving distance of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the beaches down south.
The city is also home to various Fortune 500 companies Windstream, 3m, Lockheed, and General Electric.
Greenville is a popular tourist destination because it’s a beautiful city nestled between the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the beaches of South Carolina.
Besides its bustling downtown scene, Greenville is also home to picturesque nature spots nearby.
One example is Table Rock State Park. Located northwest of Greenville and home to the largest mountain in South Carolina, the park offers a plethora of outdoor activities with scenic views that will surely take your breath away. One of the many hikes that offer this experience is Pinnacle Mountain.
Another popular tourist hotspot is the Greenville Zoo. Located in Cleveland Park, the zoo is home to numerous animals, complete with spacious enclosures and themed grounds that add to the experience.
Since 1960, the zoo has been expanding its collections of animals worldwide. Visitors can expect towering giraffes and cute and cuddly red pandas on its grounds, and they can also see these animals up close and personal thanks to in-zoo safaris.
