Newport Beach is a city in the Orange County of Southern California. Tongva Indians Payómkawichum people originally settled the area in and around Newport Beach for millennia. They were replaced by Spanish rancheros who traded with American and European merchants sailing around South America.
However, in 1852 after Spain ceded California to the United States, paired with a three-year drought forced most rancheros to sell their lands to aspiring entrepreneurs that were drawn to the area. Two of those entrepreneurs, named James Irvine and James McFadden, had the dream of turning their newly acquired lands into an important commercial center,
In 1870, Captain Samuel S. Dunnells, with the guidance of the McFadden brothers and James Irvine, sailed into Newport Bay to prove the waterways were safe for entry, creating a “new port” in the area that Dunnells named Newport Landing.
Newport Landing became a lumber terminal at first but slowly developed thriving commercial trade and shipping businesses. In 1906, Newport Landing was then renamed the city of Newport Beach, which hosted yachting, sport, and commercial fishing as tourist attractions which made Newport the largest business area in Orange County.
Today, Newport Beach is famous for its exclusive residential areas, modern and accessible shopping districts, and thriving business community scene. Newport Bay harbor also docks around 4,000 boats and yachts in its 21-square-mile marina area, while Newport Beach provides fishing, swimming, and surfing tourist activities.
Since 1905, Newport Beach has been a fan-favorite for both locals and tourists alike due to its golden sands that glimmer in the sunlight.
The beach spans from the Santa Ana River up to the tip of the Balboa Peninsula. The main municipal beach is the most popular attraction since it hosts numerous water sports and activities on its beach, boardwalk, and piers that you can enjoy alone or with the family.
Activities include taking a leisurely walk along the city’s boardwalk and two piers or jogging or cycling through for fitness enthusiasts. At the beach, Newport has plenty of activities, from kayaking, fishing, sailing, and surfing to beach volleyball and bathing in Southern California’s sunlight.
However, if you’re an avid surfer that wants more challenging beaches, then the Wedge is a must-visit attraction for you.
Located at the eastern tip of the Balboa Peninsula, the Wedge is home to the largest waves in Southern California, which makes it a hotspot for surf and water sports enthusiasts.
Locals and visitors enjoy a wide range of activities, from bodyboarding, surfing, to lounging on the sands and enjoying both the waves and the natural beauty of the area.
