About Manhattan Beach, CA

Manhattan Beach is a charming small city in the Southwestern region of Los Angeles County nestled along California’s Pacific Coast. The area was originally called “Shore Acres” by George Peck but was renamed Manhattan in 1901 after losing to a coinflip against Stewart Merrill. The area was then named after Stewart Merrill’s old hometown, New York City.

In its earliest days, the Manhattan Beach area was former sand dunes settled by the Tongva Tribe and was used to bury their dead. Archeological findings indicate that the area was settled as far as 7,000 years ago.

During the 1920s, companies like the Kuhn Brothers Construction lifted out and leveled the beach’s sandy sites and sold for profit to Hawaii to convert some of their rocky beaches into sandy dunes. The sand was also used to build a number of public infrastructures like the Los Angeles Coliseum and Pacific Coast Highway.

During World War II, people were driven to move to the city due to year-round living conditions and the rapid development of the defense industry in the South Bay.

Today, Manhattan Beach is known to be “The Pearl of South Bay” and is a popular staycation hotspot for surfers and tourists alike. The area is also notorious for housing the most exclusive beachfront properties in South California and the United States.

Top Attractions

Thanks to locally owned businesses in the area and safe streets make Manhattan Beach one of the most popular locations to visit in Southern California. With over 50 parks and a range of public amenities like basketball and tennis courts, bike paths, etc., there is something here for everyone.

However, if you’re looking to enjoy the beach, then you can visit the Manhattan Beach Pier. Located at the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard, this 928-foot pier is a scenic hotspot that dates back to the 1920s, making it one of the oldest piers on the West Coast.

The pier has been featured in many films and cult classics like Point Break and Falling Down due to its picturesque views and particularly the Mediterranean-styled look of the Roundhouse Aquarium that sits at the end of the pier.

If you want to walk through winding paths, then look no further than Bruce’s Beach. Located near the city center, this beach is actually a small park that’s perfect for rest and relaxation while the ocean breeze hits your face.

The park has lush green lawns shaded by trees that are perfect for picnics and pathways that house several benches. The park also has a basketball court if you don’t mind a friendly game or two with the locals.
